Jeep launches the Grand Cherokee & Wrangler in India

Jeep has finally made its Indian debut with the launch of the Grand Cherokee and the Wrangler Unlimited. Both these models will be brought in India as CBU (Completely Built Up) units, while the company will start local assembly at Fiat Chrysler Automobile's Ranjangaon plant from next year.

The Grand Cherokee is a premium SUV, and will be the flagship product of the Jeep brand in India. It is offered in three trims: Limited, Summit, and the SRT. The first two variants are powered by a 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine rated at 240 BHP and 570 Nm of torque. The engine is paired to an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The company claims a fuel economy figure of 12.8 km/l for the two variants. Meanwhile, Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT comes with a 6.4-litre Hemi V8 petrol engine that churns out 470 BHP and 624 Nm, while being mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Prices (ex-showroom, Delhi) of the Jeep Grand Cherokee in India are as follows:
• Limited: Rs. 93.64 lakhs
• Summit: Rs. 1.03 crores
• SRT: Rs. 1.12 crores

The Wrangler is the second model that Jeep has launched in India. Only available in a 4-door 'Unlimited' variant, this off-road SUV has been priced at Rs. 71.59 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). It is powered by a 2.8-litre CRD turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine that produces 197 BHP @ 3,600 rpm and 460 Nm @ 1,600-2,000 rpm of torque. The Wrangler Unlimited comes with a 5-speed automatic gearbox, while the Command-Trac 4WD system is standard. Jeep claims an ARAI fuel economy figure of 12.1 km/l for the Wrangler Unlimited.

Jeep is planning to open 10 dealerships in nine Indian cities by the end of this year. Ahmedabad is the first city where the Jeep Destination Store has gone live. New Delhi and Chennai will get the dealership in September, while the Mumbai outlet will follow a month later. New Delhi will also get another dealer by Diwali this year, which will then be followed by outlets in Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Kochi and Bengaluru.
