A Jimny owner checks out the Thar Roxx: Here's what impressed him most

The most sensible buy for all normal folks will definitely be the 2WD Diesel AT. 4x4 is nice but not strictly necessary for most folks.

BHPian shankar.balan recently shared this with other enthusiasts:

Much has been said and written about the Roxx.

I went and saw it today for the first time. Today being Sunday and Onam there were no other customers.

Simply put, Everything about it is very well engineered and thought through from the perspective of its target segment; the family oriented buyer who is looking for great comfort, loads of features, luxury and of course, the all important ‘Jeep-ey’ Form Factor. Most people will be swayed by how it looks. And it most definitely looks good!

Here are my First impressions based on spending 1 hour with the vehicles at VST Palace Orchards just now.

  • I find the panoramic sunroof quite ok. As a driver seat occupant I still get the effect of the open sky - yes an extra 3-4 inches in front would have been nice.
  • The dead pedal is very comfortable unlike the retro fitted ones in the 3 door Thar.
  • The footwell space is perfectly fine for even a tall driver.
  • Under thigh support is not sufficient in the front seats.
  • The rear seats are very comfortable especially with their recline and the flat floor makes a lot of difference.
  • The luggage space is more than enough for a family of four who travel reasonably lightly.
  • The bottle holders in the doors are not sufficient.
  • The front doors open around 75 degrees and that is fine. The rear doors opening 90 degrees is a master touch!
  • The grab handles all around feel solid and even handle my 95kg weight easily.
  • The side steps feel much stronger than the ones on the 3 door and do not ‘give’ or even ‘creak’ when I stand on them.
  • The top roofline is a bit odd but its fine considering the rest of the package.
  • I have no opinion one way or a other on the rear 3 quarter. Except that at an angle it looks like a Jeep with the freedom top down.
  • The last panel on the roof (D Pillar) is plastic and not perfectly flush fitting with the roof itself.
  • In my book they could have easily offered a full Tumble Foldable Rear Seat right from the factory itself. This is a hugely useful feature in terms of freeing up cavernous luggage space and many owners may do a retro fit job. If done, even a large dog can lie down comfortably on the floor at the rear. Also good they included a rear wiper.
  • The Harman Kardon 9 Speaker Music System is fantastic. The sound is lovely.
  • Last but not least - the White interiors are an absolute disaster - whether the leather ones in the AX7L or the leatherette in the MX5. The display car is 2 days old in the showroom and already there are a lot of stains and finger marks and even the seats are discoloured.

One day I will test drive it and post my impressions of that experience too. I want to try that Intelli Turn and the Electronic Diff Locks and all that.

This vehicle will definitely make for the perfect long distance tourer for family and will give all of our inner Indiana Joneses, the kick, from the Form Factor. And that Creamy 2.2 Turbo Diesel will munch the miles super efficiently.

The most sensible buy for all normal folks will definitely be the 2WD Diesel AT. 4x4 is nice but not strictly necessary for most folks.

This looks like the Definitive Grand Tourer which will unleash all our inner Indiana Jones-es for sure!

I really wish some good Auto Journalist will soon sit and do a blow by blow comparison of this Roxx vs the Wrangler Unlimited, both on road and off road.
