Land Rover Discovery Sport gets the Ingenium diesel engine

Land Rover has officially confirmed that the Discovery Sport will be offered with the all new Ingenium diesel engine. The engine is a 2.0L, 4-cylinder mill that produces either 148 BHP and 380 Nm of torque or 178 BHP and 430 Nm of torque. The Ingenium diesel engine will replace the current diesel mill in EU6 markets and will first be available in European markets and South Korea from May 2015.

The Ingenium-powered Discovery Sport will also be designated an 'E-Capability' vehicle, with a blue 'Sport' badge - highlighting its relatively higher fuel efficiency. E-Capability will apply to five-seat models equipped with either the 148 BHP or 178 BHP Ingenium engine and the variant rides on 18-inch wheels, wrapped around by low rolling resistance tyres. Additionally, the final drive gearing and engine calibration is said to have been optimized to provide the lowest possible CO2 emissions. An even more efficient front-wheel drive Ingenium equipped Discovery Sport will be added to the range later in 2015.

The feature list on the SUV includes Land Rover’s new ‘InControl’ 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, leather seats, electrically adjustable front seats, a panoramic roof, xenon headlamps, dual-zone climate control and the "Terrain Response" four wheel drive system. In markets such as Europe, the Discovery Sport also gets a first-in-class pedestrian airbag and autonomous emergency braking, but the Indian spec Discovery Sport may not see such additions.

The Discovery Sport is currently being produced at Land Rover’s manufacturing facility at Halewood, Liverpool. The British automaker claims to have received more than 15,000 Discovery Sport orders globally. JLR's Ingenium engines are manufactured in the UK at the company's new engine manufacturing centre in the West Midlands, which is set to produce 4.5 Lakh Ingenium engines annually. Currently, the Discovery Sport is available in 175 markets with the Indian market launch expected later this year.
