Made-in-India car with 5-star safety rating likely soon

The Secretary General of Global NCAP has said that a made-in-India car with a 5-star safety rating could soon be a reality. According to him, since 2014, India carmakers have made significant progress when it comes crash safety. He believes that we might see the first 5-star rated car by the end of the year.

A total of 23 Indian cars have been put through Global NCAP's crash safety tests so far and have received between 2 and 4-stars. The first 5-star rated vehicle could be among the latest lot of cars that are currently being tested in Germany. It is likely to be a top-spec variant equipped with all the latest safety features and one that meets pedestrian safety norms as well.

To incentivise automakers for building safer cars, Global NCAP had announced the 'Safer Choice' award at the 2018 Auto Expo. It will be awarded to those cars that achieve the highest levels of safety performance. To qualify for this award, a model must achieve a 5-star rating for adult occupant safety and 4-star rating for child occupant protection. The model must also offer ESC as standard and meet pedestrian protection requirements as per United Nations Regulations.
