Car buyers in Maharashtra might have to provide proof of a parking area to register their new vehicles. The state is mulling a new policy to make parking certificates mandatory with the aim of addressing issues like road congestion, parking and pollution in cities like Mumbai and Pune.
The draft proposal, which is still in its conceptual stage, was recently presented by Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar to Chief Minister Devendra Fadanvis. The policy will only be finalized after consultation with various stakeholders.
Besides this, the government also plans to introduce rules to restrict the number of vehicles per family by imposing a congestion tax. Similar rules are already in place in some of the most congested cities across the world.
