Mahindra Thar convertible hard top spotted testing

A convertible hard top will allow the Thar to be used as a weekday office car with the top on and a weekend off-roader with the roof removed.

A new test mule of the Mahindra Thar has been spotted testing. This time, the off-roader features what appears to be a removable hard top.

At present, the Thar is offered in 2 body styles - soft top and hard top. While the hard top is the practical option, it can't be easily removed. A convertible hard top will allow the Thar to be used as a weekday office car with the top on and a weekend off-roader with the roof removed.

From the images, it appears that the roof section can be removed in 3 pieces. It is likely that the removed bits of the roof would fit into the boot of the Thar. The tailgate also appears to have been modified slightly - the mounting points for the glass seems to be different from the one on the hard top currently being offered.

Mahindra Thar waiting period is now 9 months as reported last month. The Thar is available with a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder mStallion petrol engine that produces 150 BHP and 320 Nm. The off-roader also comes with a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel that makes 130 BHP and 320 Nm. Both engines are available with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission and come paired with an all-wheel drive system.
