Mahindra trying to improve fuel efficiency of U301

Mahindra is gearing up to launch the next-generation Bolero in India. Codenamed U301, the new vehicle has been spotted testing many times on the roads. While the U301 features a boxy body shell, it is expected to be a lot more modern than the car it replaces. However, Mahindra is reported to be facing some problems with the vehicle's fuel efficiency.

According to a report by Autocar India, the U301 is unable to match the fuel efficiency of the Quanto, against which it is benchmarked. In an attempt to fix the problem, Mahindra's engineers are altering the car's gear ratios, the turbo and intercooler plumbing and are tweaking the ECU.

The U301 is expected to be powered by a 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine. A petrol unit is also likely to be offered. The vehicle is also expected to be equipped with off-roading features. The vehicle is likely to get a new ladder frame chassis and will be available in various body lengths. It is expected to be more spacious and comfortable than the current Bolero.

Mahindra is likely to launch the U301 in late 2015.
