Maruti assembles 50 units of Jimny as a trial from CKD kits

The recent success of the Mahindra Thar could be one of the reasons why the Japanese car maker wants to gauge the potential interest in the 3-door car.

Trial production of the Jimny off-roader has commenced at Maruti Suzuki's Gurugram plant. The same line is used for the production of the Gypsy 4x4.

The first 50 units were made from completely knocked down (CKD) kits imported from Japan. The 3-door models will also be displayed at Nexa showrooms in the next month to gauge customer response.

The recent success of the Mahindra Thar could be one of the reasons why the Japanese car maker wants to gauge the potential interest in the 3-door car. Otherwise, Maruti Suzuki is said to have lined-up the 5-door version of the Jimny for India, however it would require retooling and redesigning, delaying the launch of the car.

The fourth-generation Jimny is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic gearbox.
