Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to launch the diesel version of the Celerio hatchback in India. Dealer dispatches of the car are slated to commence this month and the launch of the car is likely to take place by the end of May or the first week of June. Retail sales of the car are expected to start in June.

The Celerio diesel is expected to be powered by a 793cc, twin-cylinder diesel engine with common rail technology. This unit is developed in-house by Maruti Suzuki and is rumoured to be capable of producing around 35 BHP. Kenichi Ayukawa, MD and CEO of Maruti Suzuki has confirmed that the mill will deliver a fuel economy of nearly 30 km/l, making the Celerio diesel one of the most fuel-efficient cars in the market.

The small diesel engine will also be used in the Y9T light pick-up truck and later in the Eeco. The company reportedly plans to start with an annual capacity of 1 lakh units for the diesel engine.

Maruti will pit the Celerio diesel against the Beat diesel in India.
