Maruti developing a low-cost electric hatchback for India

The Maruti Y2V electric hatchback will take on the Tata Tiago.ev and MG Comet EV.

Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to launch its first pure-electric model, the e Vitara, later this year. It is part of a product offensive that includes 6 new EV launches by 2031.

According to a media report, Maruti Suzuki is developing a low-cost electric hatchback for the Indian market. Codenamed Y2V, the new model is the first EV designed and developed locally by Maruti. It is said to be based on the Suzuki eWX concept and is expected to go into production by 2028.

Technical details of the Y2V electric hatchback are still unclear. However, reports suggest that it could be powered by a 35 kWh battery, almost half the capacity of the e Vitara.

The Maruti Y2V electric hatchback will be positioned in the entry-level EV segment and will take on the Tata Tiago.ev and MG Comet EV. The estimated 5-year production volume is said to be around 2.5 lakh units.
