Maruti Suzuki WagonR EV plans shelved

The electric version would have cost around 60% more than the petrol-powered WagonR.

According to a media report, Maruti Suzuki has shelved its plan to launch the WagonR EV in India.

The all-electric version of the WagonR was unveiled in prototype form in September 2018. Since then, the car has been spotted testing on Indian roads on numerous occasions. It is said that the car was never introduced in the market as the company was skeptical about the sales volume of a Rs 10 lakh EV.

The WagonR EV reportedly offered a maximum range of 130 km on a single charge and had fast charging capabilities. However, it proved unfeasible as it cost almost 60% more than its petrol counterpart.

Unlike Tata Motors, which developed cheaper EVs by converting existing IC engine powered models, Maruti is looking at building EVs from the ground up. With plans for the WagonR EV axed, the carmaker is now looking to introduce a mid-size electric SUV (codenamed: YY8).
