Max Verstappen wins the 2021 Formula 1 World Championship

Ferrari's Carlos Sainz Jr. came home 3rd to complete the podium places at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen clinches the 2021 Formula 1 World Championship. The F1 world title fight between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton went down to the last lap of the race, after William's Nicholas Latifi crashed out on lap 52, bringing out the Safety Car.

Red Bull brought Verstappen into the pits for a set of soft tyres, while Lewis Hamilton stayed out on worn-out hard tyres. Lapped cars were initially not allowed to overtake, but a last-minute controversial change in decision by the stewards allowed Max to close the 11-second gap from Lewis. The restart saw Max overtake Hamilton in the 5th corner and then manage to keep the 7-time world champion behind for the remainder of the last lap.

Red Bull decided to retire Perez after the initial decision of not allowing lapped cars to pass under the Safety car. This allowed Ferrari's Carlos Sainz Jr. to take 3rd position and finish on the podium at Abu Dhabi.

While Max Verstappen won the Driver's world title, his team Red Bull did lose out to Mercedes-AMG Petronas who took their 8th consecutive Constructor's title.

The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was also the last F1 race for Alfa Romeo's Kimi Raikkonen, who unfortunately had to retire after a brake failure issue.
