According to media reports, the future of Coupe-SUVs in Mercedes-Benz's product lineup seems to be uncertain. The company is reportedly debating whether to either kill off its coupe SUVs entirely or merge them into a single, streamlined offering.
The German carmaker currently offers two Coupe-SUV models, the GLC Coupe rivalling the BMW X4 and the GLE Coupe taking on the BMW X6. Both Mercedes Coupe SUVs are said to account for just 10-15% of the GLC and GLE's global sales numbers, raising questions on their long-term viability.
Although tight-lipped at the moment, reports state that some executives suggest letting the coupe SUVs fade away quietly at the end of their lifecycles. However, there are a few who argue that they should be combined into one model or left as is without any change.
The upcoming electric GLC-sized SUV, which is scheduled to debut in 2026, will not get a coupe version, signalling the end of the sloped-roof SUV. The report also states that with the standard SUVs becoming more aerodynamic, Coupe SUVs could find themselves becoming redundant.
Both the GLC Coupe and GLE Coupe are relatively fresh models. The GLC Coupe was introduced in 2023, while the GLE Coupe has been around since 2019 and is expected to receive a mild refresh soon.
Mercedes, though, hasn't officially made any announcement regarding the future of its Coupe-SUVs. As part of its process to trim its product lineup, Mercedes has already combined the C-Class and E-Class Coupe convertibles into a single model - the CLE. While the S-Class 2-door variants have been discontinued entirely. Reports also suggest that the compact A and B-Class models are also about to face the axe at the end of 2026.
