Mercedes EQE retains top slot in Euro NCAP's ADAS-focused tests

The Euro NCAP tested the Tesla Model 3, back in 2020, which secured just a 2-star rating.

Euro NCAP implemented ADAS-focused tests in 2020. As per the test, vehicles taking part would be graded on a scale of 4 stars based on 2 main categories: Assistance Competence and Safety Backup. The first test measures vehicle assistance and driver engagement, while the second check how the vehicle responds in case the assistance systems fail.

For 2023, Euro NCAP has currently tested 3 vehicles: Nissan Ariya, Renault Austral and Alfa Romeo Tonale. While the Nissan & Renault SUVs scored 4 stars in the ADAS-focussed tests, both of them couldn't beat the results of the Mercedes EQE sedan, tested in 2022. The Nissan Ariya scored 77% in Assitance Competence and 86% in Safety Backup, while the Renault Austral secured 77% and 92% in the two categories, respectively.

Both of them were, however, outscored by the Mercedes EQE which secured 85% in the first category and 100% in Safety Backup. The EQE lost out on a perfect score due to the marginal performance of its driver monitoring system.

The third SUV tested in 2023 was the Alfa Romeo Tonale, which had the worst score among the 3, losing out due to its driver monitoring and speed assistance systems' lacklustre performance. Also, the Tonale lost points due to "misleading references to automation" in its promotional material.

The Euro NCAP tested the Tesla Model 3, back in 2020, which secured just a 2-star rating. This was due to securing 36% in Assistance Competence and 95% in Safety Backup.
