My modified BMW 330i M Sport with 400 BHP: Keep or sell

I am confused about whether to replace my G20 330i M Sport with a new BMW 340i or not.

BHPian Aqil recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Hi,

I own a G20 330i M Sport. Have already invested a lot into it. Have a big turbo kit too, capable of 400 bhp. Forged internals and whatnot. But I have been itching for the 40i as it’s capable of 1000 bhp, with the mods available already. Basic bolt-on and you are good to go. I have read that the B58 will take more than 600 to 700 BHP without a built block.

So, I am thinking about selling my 330i. Where can I get the best price? What should I expect with mods of well over 7 lakh?

Here's what GTO had to say about the matter:

One rarely recovers the money spent on accessories or modifications, unless it's an enthusiast who really wants that stuff. At best, you'll get 1/3rd of what you spent on the mods, although you will encounter many people who don't want a modified car (reliability, warranty gone, etc.).

If you don't mind spending the differential, by all means, sell your 330i (it's a seller's market so you will get a good price) and buy the 340i.

Personally, what I would do is a lateral upgrade. In 2 - 3 years, you'll see 340is hitting the used market. Hence, I would drive my 330i some more, then sell used & buy used. If you're taking a depreciation hit on your 330i, might as well buy a depreciated 340i. Who knows, in 2 - 3 years, you might have the budget for a pre-owned M3. A Team-BHP Mod recently bought a beautiful used M3 in Bombay.

Here's what BHPian rocksterraghu had to say about the matter:

B48 to B58? I don’t think so.

330i MSport, M340i or whatever M badges you put on them, they are just pretentious. There is a good reason I say that.

S58 is almost an entirely differently engine - mod-friendly, low compression motor to forged internals from the factory; you don’t need more than a simple map to take the car to insane levels that 340i will probably be having wet dreams of. Between the B48 in the 340i vs S58, is a no brainer. The G87 M2 is expected in 2022 in pure RWD and the tuning for the new generation S58 would have opened up fully by then. That is if you are not able to afford the G80/82 M3/M4.

Pure RWD M car is a purist choice if you ask me. AWDs, while they can be changed to RWD with the press of a button on the new M cars, still continue to add about 50 kilos of axle weight at the front. You may say, 50 kilos is nothing on a car that makes 380 horses but it’s not about how much but where - if I make you run with a 5-kilo sandbag on your neck, you will do it happily, not so much if I tie them to your ankles. In the 340i, you can’t even change it to pure RWD, unless you use aftermarket coding - the biggest bummer about the car, for me.

My suggestion, stop wasting your time on B engines and move on to real M cars.
