Nissan to bring Leaf EV to India this FY

Nissan is reported to have disclosed that it plans to launch the Leaf 2 (second-generation Leaf EV) in India during the current fiscal. The car will be imported as a completely built up unit (CBU). The company plans to bring a fleet of Leaf 2 EVs to Chennai for test drive purposes ahead of its launch.

While the Leaf 2 will not be a high-volume product, Nissan has plans to homologate it in India. The company is not planning on making it cost competitive in the initial phase.

The second-generation Leaf made its debut in October 2017. The Leaf 2 is a 5-door hatchback with a V-shaped grille with black inserts, sweptback headlamps and a gently sloping roof line. The rear of the car features V-shaped tail lights and a tailgate with a glossy black panel.

On the inside, the Leaf 2 gets dual-tone interiors with a 3-spoke multi-function steering wheel and a digital instrument cluster. The centre console houses a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support.

The Leaf 2 is powered by an AC synchronous electric motor with an output of 148 BHP @ 3,283-9,795 rpm and 320 Nm of torque @ 3,283 rpm. This motor is paired with an automatic transmission. It uses a 350 V, 40 kWh lithium-ion battery, which Nissan claims can be charged to 80% using a fast charger in 40-60 minutes depending on charging conditions. The claimed maximum range is 378 km.
