The government of Maharashtra has announced that light motor vehicles (LMVs), which include cars, jeeps, vans and small trucks, will not have to pay a toll when entering the city. The exemption of toll will be effective from October 15, 2024.
Currently, vehicles have to pass through one of five toll booths to enter Mumbai. These include Dahisar, Mulund Wests, Vashi, Airoli and Mulund East. The decision on the toll waiver for LMVs was taken during a recent cabinet meeting. It was later announced publicly by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
Shinde, in his statement, termed the move as a “masterstroke”, as it would help save time and fuel, and reduce pollution. “It was a long pending demand to waive toll at Mumbai's entry points. Many activists, including I, had approached the court demanding the same,” he said.
