According to a media report, Norway registered 12,966 units of new car sales in the month of September 2024. Of this, 12,495 units were electric cars, translating to a record market share of 94.3% compared to August 2024. Only the remaining 471 units of sales came from cars without a battery-electric drive.
In terms of year-on-year sales, EVs registered a 25.4% increase, from 9,000 units during the same month in 2023.
The report even gave a fuel-based split-up of new car sales in Norway from September 2024. As per reports, apart from 12,495 units of pure EVs, Norway registered 146 units of plug-in hybrids, 142 units of petrol hybrids, 135 units of pure diesel models, and just 48 units of pure petrol-powered cars.
Talking about the impressive sales of EVs last month, Øyvind Solberg Thorsen, Director of Norwegian Road Authority OFV, said, "New car sales in 2024 have so far been characterised by large fluctuations and rather low sales figures. Now we are seeing some economic recovery, which could lead to more people visiting car dealerships." He also mentioned how a large shipment of Teslas ordered a while ago "clearly contributed to the increase in registrations in September."
The high EV sales figures are said to be in line with the country's political goal of all new cars being pure electric from 2025. The OFV director stated that despite the high EV sales in September, the annual average share of electric cars in the country is at 88%.
Amidst the high EV sales, Tesla's Model Y topped the list as Norway's best-selling car, with the Model 3 in second place. Other EVs on the list include the Volvo EX30, Skoda Enyaq, Toyota bZ4X, BMW i4, and Hyundai Kona EV, to name a few.
