Polaris starts importing ATVs from China, prices dropped

American ATV (all-terrain vehicle) manufacturer, Polaris' Indian arm has started importing ATVs from China. Bringing CKD (Completely Knocked Down) units from China has helped the company to reduce prices of their products to half of their earlier price tag. The manufacturer expects that this price drop will help them double their sales volumes by next year.

Polaris recently acquired a China-based ATV manufacturing company named Hammer Head. As a result, India will now get ATVs from this new Chinese company. While Polaris ATVs were imported from USA as CBUs (Completely Built Units) and were priced between Rs. 5.5 lakh to Rs. 30 lakh, the Hammer Head ATVs imported as CKD from China will have a starting price of Rs. 2.85 lakh in India.

The ATV segment in India is still a very niche market, with low sales volumes of around 1,200 vehicles per year. But the US automaker claims that the market will likely grow to around 5,000 units per year, once global players like Honda and Yamaha enter the segment. Polaris currently enjoys a 20% market share of the small ATV segment. The company has mainly sold its ATVs in India to security forces and experience zones.
