Reliance Jio to enter automobile telematics market in 2017

Reliance Jio Infocomm, the company that spurred the telecommunication industry last year by offering free calls and data to mobile users, will soon enter the automobile telematics market. We had earlier reported that Reliance was working on an OBD Service called Jio Car Connect. According to recent reports, the company has readied the product and is currently in talks with various automobile companies to launch it in the commercial market by the end of this year.

Jio Car Connect is an OBD service, in which a hardware device is plugged into the OBD port of a car. The owner can then fire up the Car Connect app on his smartphone and can access various details about the vehicle, including oil stats, water levels, fuel info, battery change alerts, etc. Moreover, the owner can also control the car's air conditioning from a remote location and even receive alerts in case someone tries to break into the vehicle.

The company is yet to decide the final pricing of the device, though sources suggest that it will cost around Rs. 2,000. Initially, the hardware will be imported from China, while local production will start after the initial roll-out.
