Is Rs 50,000 more worth it: Triumph Speed 400 vs T4 for city commutes

How much difference in fuel efficiency can I expect between these motorcycles?

BHPian Foretio recently shared this with other enthusiasts:

Looking into buying a new motorcycle and confused between the Triumph Speed 400 and Speed T4.

I took a test ride and found the T4 to be more than enough for my use case of 35Km daily office commute in city traffic. But the dilemma is, will I itch for an upgrade a few years down the line or regret not spending 50k more for Speed 400? I will be moving from Pulsar 150/Splendour Plus/Bullet G2 to Triumph. I’m 23, 5’8, 66 kg.

Triumph Speed 400 vs Speed T4 questions

  • Is it worth spending 50k more on Speed 400 for better brakes, tyres, USD forks, +10HP over the T4?
  • I have read many reviews about T4 and Speed 400 and many people have mentioned that T4 is a better-built product mechanically. Is it because of its usable torque at low RPM or any other differences?
  • How much mileage difference can I expect between the bikes? I know that they give in the range of 20-26 in city traffic conditions.
  • During my test ride, I found the heat on Speed 400 to be more when compared to T4, is it due to a difference in power output figures?
  • I won’t be upgrading the bike for another 7 years and it will be my primary bike. Is the 400 range reliable for that long?
  • Saw a few cases of oil leak on Speed 400 while I was researching, is that issue on T4 as well?
  • Also, many owners have reported a shim notice in the engine. Is it resolved?
  • Is there any news of an updated colour scheme or updates regarding Speed 400 in the upcoming few months, or is Triumph going to continue with the same MY25 specs?

The 50 thousand extra is definitely worth it for these most important items. In fact, you are getting more value than 50 thousand rupees with these additions in the Speed 400.

Cheers

Here's what BHPian ram1980 replied:

T4 is better for day-to-day usage in the city as it offers better torque at low revs. The additional features that Speed 400 offers are value for money for the price increase, but for regular bike users, these features are not deal breakers.

The main difference that you need to watch out for is the suspension. Speed 400 has better suspension, in my opinion. Try for longer test drives or rent these bikes for a day if possible.
