Rumour: Cleveland Cyclewerks shuts down India operations

According to a media report, Cleveland Cyclewerks has shut down its operations in India.

It has been reported that the assembly unit in Pune closed down nearly 8 months ago and that many employees were laid off without notice.

Cleveland Cyclewerks is a US-based 2-wheeler brand that had unveiled its range of motorcycles at the 2018 Auto Expo. The company had partnered with Laish-Madison Motorwerks to set up an assembly plant in Pune, where it built the bikes using CKD kits imported from China.

In April 2019, the government of India introduced new safety norms that mandated ABS for bikes with engines larger than 125cc. Since, none of the Cleveland bikes were updated to meet the new regulations, the company could no longer sell them in India.
