Rumour: Datsun brand to be axed

According to a media report, Nissan is likely to axe the Datsun brand. The carmaker is also said to be planning to shut down a number of assembly lines worldwide to boost profits.

The report also states that Nissan calls it the "performance recovery plan". The company registered its lowest operating profit in 11 years following the ouster of Carlos Ghosn - its then Chairman. Earlier this year, Ghosn was arrested on charges of financial misconduct.

Unprofitable models are expected to be discontinued, while underutilized production lines could be shut down. Barring China, Nissan might cut production at most of its units. However, the report states that the company has no plans of shutting down an entire plant or withdrawing from any country.

Nissan hasn't confirmed this report.
