Rumour: Mahindra Thar 2WD to be launched in January 2023

The 1.5L 2WD variant of the Thar will qualify for the lower tax bracket.

Recently, a spy image of what seemed like a 2WD version of the Mahindra Thar was doing the rounds on social media. Now, a media report suggests that Mahindra is indeed working on the Thar 4x2. Interestingly, a new entry-level variant with a smaller 1.5-litre diesel engine is also on the cards.

The report states that Mahindra will be launching the Thar 1.5L 2WD sometime next month. It is said to be the same 1.5-litre oil burner that powers the Marazzo. It puts out 121 BHP and 300 Nm. Crucially, this variant will qualify for the lower tax bracket thanks to the smaller engine and sub-4 meter length.

In addition to the Thar 1.5L 2WD, Mahindra is also expected to introduce a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol 4x2 variant. Both rear-wheel drive versions will come equipped with a 6-speed manual gearbox.
