Rumour: Mahindra Thar engine & gearbox offerings

The upcoming Mahindra Thar is expected to get a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine as well as a 2.0-litre mStallion petrol engine. According to reports, the petrol engine could produce 187 BHP and 380 Nm, while the diesel engine could be rated at 138 BHP. Both engines will come with a manual and a torque-converter automatic gearbox, which will be sourced from Aisin.

Interestingly, it is said that both engines will come with hard top and soft top options.

The new Thar is expected to be based on the Gen3 chassis and appears to be wider than the outgoing car. It retains its traditional design featuring a typical seven slat grille and circular headlamps and flared wheel arches. The SUV also gets black 5-spoke alloy wheels and Thar branding on the ORVMs and tail lights.

On the inside, it gets a touchscreen head unit on the centre console, carbon fibre-like trim around the AC vents, Thar branding on the doors, and what appears to be roof-mounted speakers. It also comes with front-facing rear seats with adjustable head rests.

The next generation Thar will be unveiled on August 15, 2020.
