Rumour: Maruti to launch WagonR EV in 2020

Maruti plans to launch its first electric vehicle (EV) in 2020. According to a recent media report, the company’s first budget EV is likely to be based on the WagonR.

The WagonR EV would be a product of the Toyota-Suzuki partnership. The current-gen WagonR has been around since 2010 and hence the EV could be based on the next-generation platform.

Although not yet confirmed, the WagonR EV could be manufactured at Maruti's Gujarat plant, in the vicinity of a future battery-manufacturing unit. At present, Maruti assembles the WagonR at its Gurgaon factory. It has also been reported that the carmaker might continue building the WagonR here and source components for the electric powertrain from Gujarat.

According to previous reports, Maruti's first EV would use technologies developed by Suzuki. The compact EV could be priced under Rs. 10 lakh and might have an output of 25 to 35 kWh. Maruti Suzuki will also launch EVs built in partnership with Toyota.
