Rumour: Maruti to re-launch Fiat-sourced 1.6L diesel engine

According to a media report, Maruti Suzuki is rumoured to re-introduce the Fiat-sourced 1.6-litre diesel engine.

The 1.6-litre diesel unit is expected to be upgraded to meet BS-VI emission standards and could be launched by the end of next year. A test mule of the S-Cross sporting a '1.6' badge has also been spotted testing. This suggests that the development of the new motor may already be underway.

The 1.6-litre diesel engine was offered on the S-Cross, but was later discontinued. The report states that the updated engine is likely to be offered in the S-Cross, Ertiga-based XL6 and the new Vitara.

In its BS-IV configuration, the 1.6-litre diesel produced 118 BHP @ 3,750 rpm and 320 Nm @ 1,750 rpm. The engine was paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox.
