Rumour: Maruti shelves 1.5L BS6 diesel engine plans

The 1.5L BS6 diesel engine was supposed to power the Ertiga, Ciaz, next-gen Vitara Brezza and the upcoming D22 crossover.

Maruti Suzuki has reportedly abandoned the development of the 1.5-litre BS6 diesel engine.

Maruti had been working on a BS6-compliant diesel engine ever since the ubiquitous Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre unit was discontinued. It is said that the decision to shelve the plan was made by Suzuki Motor Corporation, sighting investment issues. Further, rising diesel prices and the need to shift towards cleaner propulsion systems may have also influenced the decision.

Earlier, we had reported that the 1.5-litre BS6 diesel engine was almost ready and scheduled to be launched in the Ertiga and Ciaz. The same engine was expected to power the next generation Vitara Brezza and the D22 crossover.

The latest sales figures indicate that the market is more inclined towards cleaner fuels and electric vehicles. The Nexon EV is a good example, as Tata claims that the demand for the electric version is comparable to the diesel version of the crossover. The government of India is also pushing CNG and flex-fuel engines with the aim to reduce emissions.
