Rumour: Maruti / Toyota SUV trial production begins

The Creta-rivaling Maruti / Toyota SUVs could be launched sometime around this festive season.

Maruti Suzuki and Toyota are working on new SUVs that will take on the likes of the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. According to a recent report, trial production has already commenced and the cars could be officially revealed around June or July.

Both Maruti and Toyota's version of the SUV will be manufactured at Toyota's Bidadi plant, near Bangalore. The SUVs will be based on a localized version of Toyota's TNGA-B platform. To keep costs down the bulk of the components will be sourced from Maruti's suppliers.

Reports also suggest that both SUVs are expected to be offered with petrol and diesel engine options. Besides a mild-hybrid unit, the carmakers will also offer a segment-first strong hybrid powertrain.

When it comes to design, both SUVs will have a distinct exterior. Both models will get touchscreen infotainment systems and connected tech developed by Toyota. The cars are also likely to get features like ventilated seats and a sunroof.
