Rumour: Nissan Micra XL to get CVT

The Nissan Micra hatchback has been a poor seller in India, with monthly sales unable to touch four digits. However, the Japanese manufacturer has not given up on the car.

The company is rumoured to be gearing up to introduce a new variant of the Micra hatchback. This new variant will be based on the XL (base) trim level of the petrol version of the car and will come with a continuous variable transmission (CVT). It will be aimed at those looking at the convenience offered by the automatic gearbox and are not too interested in other features.

The XL CVT will use the same 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine as the XL MT. This engine produces 76 BHP and 104 Nm of torque. The car will be equipped with features such as reverse parking sensors, audio system, anti-lock braking system and a driver's side airbag.

With the introduction of automated manual transmission, the market for cheap automatic hatchbacks in India is increasing. Nissan could be trying to take advantage of this trend.

At present, the CVT is available only on the XV trim level. The XL CVT, Nissan should help the car appeal to a larger audience.
