Rumour: Peugeot to launch 208 and 308 hatchbacks in India

The PSA group, which owns Peugeot and Citroen brands, has already announced that it will be entering the Indian market by 2019. The automaker has joined hands with the CK Birla Group for using the latter's manufacturing facility in Chennai. Now, rumours mentioning the range of cars coming to India under the PSA group have surfaced.

According to some reports, the first car from the PSA Group to be launched in India will be the Peugeot 208 hatchback. It will be powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine that will churn out around 81 BHP. A diesel engine option will also likely be on offer, though its capacity isn't known yet. Both automatic and manual gearboxes are expected to be available with the 208 hatchback. This will be followed by the Peugeot 308, which will be placed in the premium hatchback segment. It will come with a 3-cylinder Puretech petrol engine, which might be offered in varied states of tune.

The company will also be introducing a couple of SUVs in India. These include the 2008 and the 3008, both of which will likely come with a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol with 128 BHP on tap and a 1.6-litre diesel rated between 97 BHP and 118 BHP. They are likely to come with manual as well as automatic gearbox options, while a two-wheel drive layout will be standard across the range.

The manufacturer is yet to officially reveal details of its India line-up, which will likely see the daylight sometime next year. There is also a possibility of the PSA Group showcasing some models at the 2018 Auto Expo to gauge customer response.
