Rumour: Royal Enfield might buy Ducati from VW

We had recently reported that Volkswagen might be planning to sell the Ducati brand in order to accumulate enough funds to invest in its ambitious electrification project. Now, media reports suggest that Eicher-owned Royal Enfield has approached the German automotive group and shown interest in buying Ducati from VW.

No official information about the said steps has been revealed by Eicher or the Volkswagen Automotive Group (VAG). Royal Enfield has been recording some aggressive sales numbers in the Indian two-wheeler market. It is also expanding its operations in other Asian countries, Europe as well as North America. The company's MD & CEO, Siddhartha Lal has declined to comment on the said reports, though he did indicate that Royal Enfield is open to explore all opportunities that come its way.

Ducati was acquired by Volkswagen's luxury car brand - Audi, in 2012, for 860 million Euros. In the current scenario, the brand is valued at around 1.5 billion Euros. Other companies that have reportedly shown interest in buying the Ducati brand include Suzuki, Polaris, Honda and Harley Davidson.
