Rumour: Tata Hexa to be phased out in 2020

According to a media report, the Tata Hexa could be phased out in 2020, when the BS-VI emission regulations come into effect. It is expected to be replaced by the Buzzard - a 7-seat version of the Harrier.

It has been reported that the 2.2-litre diesel engine that powers the Hexa is likely to be upgraded to meet BS-VI norms, but it will only be offered in commercial vehicles. The emission limits for BS-VI engines are more stringent for passenger vehicle applications. Therefore, upgrading the 2.0-litre engine to CV emission standards is comparatively cheaper. As per the new regulations, the NOx limit for N1 category CVs is 0.105-0.125 g/km, while NOx emissions for passenger vehicles cannot exceed 0.08 g/km. Tata's large passenger vehicles are expected to use the 2.0-litre diesel engine instead.

The Buzzard was unveiled at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. It shares its platform with the Harrier and has a similar exterior design. The Buzzard is longer and has a larger rear quarter glass and a taller profile to accommodate the third row of seats. The SUV is likely to be powered by a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine producing 170 BHP and 350 Nm of torque. It is expected to get a 6-speed manual transmission as standard with a Hyundai-sourced 6-speed automatic gearbox as an option.
