Rumour: Tata Tiago electric to first target export markets

Tata Motors is said to be working on an all-electric version of the Tiago. It is now rumoured that the company might start production of the Tiago electric hatchback by the end of next month (August 2017). Moreover, Tata is likely to focus on export markets initially. An India launch can be expected at a later date.

Not much is known about the powertrain that will be used to power the Tiago electric. Previous reports have suggested that Tata Motors has decided to use the Tiago for electrification as the hatchback's low-cost platform is expected to offset the high cost of an electric powertrain, thus helping the company to price the car competitively.

The main reason behind Tata first targeting export markets with the Tiago hatchback is probably the high taxes that have been made applicable on hybrid and electric vehicles after the implementation of GST in India. This has made it difficult to price an electric car competitively in the country. Hence, Tata appears to have decided to test waters in international markets first, before introducing its first-ever electric car in its home country.
