Rumour: Toyota to offer 7-seater Corolla Cross in India

The 7-seater Corolla Cross will compete with the Hyundai Alcazar, MG Hector Plus and Tata Safari.

According to a media report, Toyota is planning to introduce the Corolla Cross in India. However, it won’t be the same car that’s available in the global market. Instead, the Indian version is likely to be a 3-row SUV with a 7-seater layout.

The Corolla Cross shares its underpinnings with the Innova Hycross, but makes do with a shorter wheelbase of 2,640 mm, which is ideal for a 5-seater SUV. To accommodate an additional row of seats, Toyota will have to stretch the wheelbase of the car.

That’s exactly what the company is believed to be working on. It will enable Toyota to tap into the 7-seater SUV space currently dominated by models like the Hyundai Alcazar, MG Hector Plus and Tata Safari.

It is said that the TNGA-C platform will be modified to suit the stretched Corolla Cross. Toyota might also opt to differentiate the 7-seater SUV with a new front and rear design.

Reports suggest that the 7-seater Corolla Cross could be offered with the same set of engines as the Innova Hycross. These include a 2.0-litre petrol and a 2.0-litre strong hybrid. That being said, it is unlikely to get a diesel engine option.
