Rumour: Upcoming Mahindra MPV to get 1.6L diesel engine

Mahindra has been working on a new MPV which is expected to be introduced as a replacement for the ageing Xylo. Internally codenamed as the U321, this vehicle has already been spotted testing multiple times in the country. While detailed information about the specifications of the U321 isn't available yet, media reports suggest that the automaker is currently developing a new 1.6-litre diesel engine for the MPV.

This new powerplant is likely to be a part of Mahindra's mFalcon family of modular engines. Currently, the only mFalcon engines available in the market are the 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol and diesel units found under the hood of the KUV100. The 1.6-litre unit will be the second mFalcon diesel unit to be offered. The company is also said to be working on a 1.5-litre engine that will be joining the mFalcon family in the distant future.

The engine being developed for the U321 MPV is reported to produce around 128 BHP. In addition to the said MPV, this new engine might also power the compact crossover that is currently under works. This crossover will be based on the SsangYong Tivoli and is expected to be launched sometime next year.
