Rumour: Volkswagen considering new Polo GT, GTI for India

German carmaker Volkswagen is rumoured to be considering the introduction of sportier models of the Polo hatchback in the country.

Among the cars that Volkswagen could bring is the new Polo GT. The car is powered by a 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine that puts out 148 bhp. This engine is found in the Skoda Octavia sedan currently sold in India. The company could also bring the Polo GTI, which is powered by a 1.8-litre 189 bhp TSI petrol power plant. Both these engines are found in different states of tune in variants of the Skoda Octavia in India.

If Volkswagen does launch the GT or GTI, even with local assembly, they are likely to be priced over Rs. 17 lakh, which is more than some D1 segment sedans. This could mean that the Polo GT and GTI could have trouble finding buyers other than the few enthusiasts who are willing to pay such a high price for a hatchback.
