Rumour: Volvo XC90 plug-in hybrid to be built locally

According to a media report, Volvo is planning to build plug-in hybrid variants of the XC90 in India from 2019. The cars will be imported as a completely knocked down (CKD) units and will be assembled alongside the standard XC90 and S90. Meanwhile, CKD assembly of the XC60 is set to begin later this year.

The XC90 plug-in hybrid is offered in 2 variants - Inscription and Excellence priced at Rs. 96.65 lakh and Rs. 1.31 crore (ex-showroom) respectively. Local production is expected to bring down costs and boost sales.

The plug-in hybrid powertrain consists of a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor. It develops a combined output of 401 BHP and 640 Nm of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox.
