Special number plate for Vintage cars

According to a media report, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has issued a draft notification regarding registration of vintage cars. Vintage cars will now get the letters 'VA' in the registration number, which will follow the state code - e.g. MH VA XX 1234.

Owners of such cars will have to pay Rs. 20,000 as a one-time fee to register / re-register their vehicles. Documents like a valid insurance policy, bill of entry (for imports) and old registration certificates (for registered vehicles) will have to be furnished. The registration will be valid for a period of 10 years, after which it can be renewed.

It is also reported that vehicles older than 50 years from the date of first registration including imports, will be classified as vintage motor vehicles. Further, each state will also set up a Vintage Motor Vehicles State Committee (VMVSC) to approve or reject a car's vintage tag. Sale and purchase of vintage cars will be allowed as long as the state transport authority is notified within 90 days.

While vintage cars will not be allowed on roads for regular use, such vehicles can be taken out for exhibition, rallies, shows or museum displays, participation in events, historical tours and ceremonial occasions, technical research and cinematography. These cars will also be allowed on the roads for refuelling and maintenance reasons.
