Surprise! BMW won't use ugly grille for the 2 Series

The 2022 BMW 2 Series prototype has been spied with a conventional-looking kidney grille.

BMW will soon be introducing the 2022 iteration of its 2 Series Coupe. Ahead of its global unveil, the prototype of the compact-sedan has been caught undergoing testing.

As seen from the spy images, the 2022 BMW 2 Series features a conventional-sized front grille, skipping the large kidney grille featured on its M3 and M4 siblings. The 2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe prototype can also be seen sporting a long bonnet and short overhangs, along with what looks like an integrated spoiler on the boot.

Reports also suggest that the upcoming 2 Series will switch to a revamped CLAR architecture, which is also shared with most other models in the brand's lineup. This will allow BMW to introduce the new 2 Series with a 48V mild-hybrid configuration as well.

The new 2 Series Coupe will be offered in both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive options. Reports suggest that the new 2 Series Coupe will be powered by either a 1.5-litre three-cylinder unit or a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine.

The entry and mid-level variants will come with rear-wheel-drive as standard. A 3.0-litre inline 6-cylinder petrol engine will be available on the M240i variant which will also come with BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system.

The top-of-the-line M2 is said to be powered by a detuned version of the 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline 6-cylinder engine from the M3 and M4 models. It is said to produce 420 BHP and 550 Nm, paired with either a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed automatic. The power is exclusively sent to the rear wheels.
