Tata launches Electronic Stability Control on MHCVs and HCVs

Tata Motors has introduced Electronic Stability Control (ESC) on its medium and heavy-duty trucks. ESC, along with Automatic Traction Control (ATC) and Hills Start Assist (HSA) will be available on the Prima and Signa range of commercial vehicles.

The safety technology is developed in partnership with WABCO India. It is expected to reduce the risk of accidents, repair costs and improve vehicle uptime as well as enhance road safety and efficiency of the commercial vehicles.

According to Tata Motors, ESC automatically intervenes and applies brakes to avoid rollover or jack-knifing in case of a tractor-trailer combination. Tata claims that it helps to eliminate more than 50% of rollover crashes and reduce loss-of-control crashes by 25%. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) work in tandem with this system to avoid skidding. Sensors measure the vehicle's lateral acceleration and roll angles. The system selectively applies brakes to maintain directional stability.

ATC prevents wheel spin under acceleration especially when traction is limited on slippery surfaces in mines or on ice. It is claimed to reduce tyre wear. HSA prevents roll back when starting off on a steep gradient which minimizes clutch and brake wear.

Electronic Stability Control (ESC) will be available on Prima - Tractors 4025.S, 4925 and Trucks 2523T, 3123T and 3723T and Signa LPS 4018 and LPS 4923 as well as LPT platforms of 25T, 31T and 37T.
