For the first time in 4 decades, the best-selling model in India isn't a Maruti Suzuki. The Punch was the highest-selling model, with over 2 lakh units sold during CY2024.
The Tata Punch dethroned the WagonR from the top spot. While 2,02,030 units of the Punch were sold, 1,90,855 units of the WagonR found buyers. The Maruti Ertiga was the third-highest seller with 1,90,091 units, followed by the Brezza and Hyundai Creta with 1,88,160 units and 1,86,919 units, respectively.
Passenger vehicle sales reached 33.49 lakh units in 2018. Back then, Maruti Suzuki had a market share of 52%, and the top 5 best-selling models were all from Maruti.
In 2024, Maruti's market share slipped to 41%, even though passenger vehicle sales rose to 42.86 lakh units. Moreover, out of the top 5 best-sellers, three were SUVs, which is a clear indication of the changing customer preference.
