Telangana proposes a 15% tax rebate for vehicle scrapping

At least 1,000 RTC buses are in the ‘to-be condemned’ category.

The state government of Telangana plans to promote the scrapping of old vehicles by offering tax concessions. The government is considering offering a 10-15% rebate on motor vehicle tax on the purchase of new ones.

According to the joint transport commissioner C Ramesh, the draft policy has already been submitted. It will be implemented once it is approved by the state government and the vehicle scrapping facilities will begin their operations.

In 2022, 15-year-old vehicles were involved in 1,306 accidents in the state, that caused 418 fatalities and left more than 1,100 people injured. As per reports, at least 1,000 RTC buses are in the ‘to-be condemned’ category. Another 2,000 buses used by educational institutions are over 15 years old.
