Tesla to open its first showrooms in India in July

The Model Y is expected to cost more than $56,000 (Rs 48 lakh approx) once it goes on sale in India.

Tesla is set to commence its operations in India next month. According to a media report, the US-based EV maker will open its first showrooms in Mumbai and New Delhi by mid-July.

The Model Y will be the first Tesla electric vehicle to be offered in India. It will be imported from Tesla's Shanghai factory in China. Reports suggest that the Model Y will be available in a single-motor rear-wheel-drive configuration.

Tesla is said to have imported five Model Ys from China. As per the documents, the cars were declared at Rs 27.70 lakh ($31,988) and attracted an import duty of more than Rs 21 lakh.

Considering India charges 70% import tariff on fully-built imported cars under $40,000, the Model Y is expected to cost more than $56,000 (Rs 48 lakh approx) once it goes on sale in India.

The documents also reveal that Tesla has imported Supercharger components, car accessories, merchandise and spares from the US, China and the Netherlands.
