TKM plant sourced 87% renewable power in FY19

Toyota Kirloskar Motor’s (TKM) factory in Bidadi, Karnataka sourced 87% of its electricity from renewable sources of energy in FY2018-19 (till January 2019). TKM claims to have reduced its carbon footprint by more than 51,000 tones of CO2 during the first three quarters of the current fiscal. It aims to achieve zero CO2 emissions by 2050.

The company has said that it is moving from non-renewable to renewable sources of energy across its business operations. It has increased Green Energy Procurement and is investing in the renewable energy sector to meet its energy requirements. According to Toyota, the renewable energy sourcing increased from 15% in FY2015-16 to 65% in FY2017-18. In October 2018, 100% of its energy requirements were met through renewable sources.

Toyota has also installed solar power plants at its Bidadi plant. The rooftop and ground facilities have a combined capacity of 8.4 MW.

Toyota plans to reduce its CO2 emissions by reducing its consumption and improving operational efficiency of its factory. For this, Toyota has installed reverse refrigeration systems, centrally controlled chillers and smart air-conditioning. Technologies such as servo press, global body welding line, wet on wet painting and energy efficient manufacturing equipment are also claimed to reduce overall CO2 emissions.
