Tokyo Court rejects Carlos Ghosn's bail request

According to a media report, Carlos Ghosn was denied bail despite offering a series of conditions. He has been in custody since November 2018.

Earlier this month, Mr. Ghosn appeared in court to challenge his detention. It was revealed that he was in detention due to flight risk and the possibility of evidence tampering. Subsequently, his lawyers put forth conditions which included submitting his 3 passports, wearing an electronic monitoring device and hiring guards to monitor him.

The denial of bail has reportedly increased the criticism of the Japanese justice system, where one can reportedly be detained for up to 23 days without being charged. Bail is also not granted unless the suspect admits guilt.

Carlos Ghosn was arrested in November last year over financial misconduct and was later removed as the Chairman of Nissan.
