Toyota imports Aygo for R&D purpose

Earlier this year, Toyota admitted defeat in the mass market segment in India. The company said they would instead focus on segments in which the Corolla and Innova are strong players. Last week, there was a report that Toyota is believed to seeking the help of Daihatsu to crack the Indian mass market segment. At the same time, Toyota has imported an Aygo hatchback into the country for R&D purpose.

The Aygo that has been imported has a 998 cc engine, 5 doors and measures 3455 mm in length. It is good to slot under the Liva. The Liva and Etios have also been criticized for having rather dated and dull styling. The Aygo is certainly a lot more modern and interesting when it comes to looks - both on the outside as well as the inside.

While the Aygo has been imported for R&D, it is not clear whether Toyota will launch it in India. The company could even be using it for conducting a research to develop an India-specific entry level hatchback. Toyota's new car will have to feature a high level of localisation if it is to be priced competitively. It will also need to be equipped with safety features such as airbags and anti-lock braking system, which are likely to me made mandatory in India in the near future.
