Toyota issues global recall for the Etios over faulty airbags

Toyota has announced a global recall for the Etios line-up. The move has been taken to fix faulty Takata airbag inflators which have been haunting the global automotive industry for the past couple of years. Both the Etios sedan and the Etios Liva hatchback have been placed under the said recall. It must be noted here that Toyota India hasn't yet issued any recall related notification for the Etios line-up in the domestic market.

The aforementioned global recall affects a total of 5.8 million Toyota cars. Major models under the scanner include the Corolla, Yaris, Hilux, and the Etios. Currently, the recall spans to countries like Japan, China, Europe, Central and South America, Africa, Middle East, and Singapore.

A large batch of airbags supplied by Takata has been found to have faulty inflators that can rupture at high temperatures, spewing out sharp metal fragments. This issue has reportedly led to around 16 deaths across the globe. Global transportation authorities have estimated around 100 million faulty airbag inflators worldwide.
