Toyota loyalist booked a Hyryder but is now considering Virtus & Slavia

I'm having second thoughts as my primary car is an Innova Crysta & I've always been a fan of the TSI + DSG combo.

I was planning to replace my second car, a 12-year-old Liva. My primary car is a time-tested Crysta. Being a Toyota loyalist, I had booked a Hyryder at the time of the launch and kept the booking on hold.

However, now I am having second thoughts and considering a spacious and fun-to-drive sedan which is tall enough for easy ingress/egress for senior citizens. Monthly running will be maximum 800 kms. It will be mostly driven by my wife and occasionally by me.

Being a fan of TSI+DSG, Virtus and Slavia came to my mind. However, I am a bit concerned about the VW after-sales support.

Looking for BHPians' wisdom.

You're the ideal candidate to have fun with a VW simply because you have a reliable backup - the Crysta!

VW / Skoda experience will purely be a hit or miss. If it's the DSG, you can now get 8 years or 7 years of warranty for Skoda and VW respectively. But the final experience will completely depend on the service centre and its management as time goes by.

All said and done, I'd suggest you get a test drive vehicle home and check whether the senior members will be comfortable with the car in the first place. Also, check whether the overall quality of plastics etc is satisfactory for you.

But if reliability is anywhere close to your concerns, continue with your Hyryder booking - expect a few niggles and issues as part of the VAG experience.

Go for Virtus/Slavia. Hyryder is no match on interiors, engine options and build quality.

Hyryder will disappoint a true Toyota loyalist because there is no Toyota in Hyryder apart from Hybrid tech. Basically, it is a Maruti Suzuki under the badge of Toyota.

You already have Crysta for difficult roads/for larger groups/for additional luggage - a complete utility package, so now it's time to delight yourself with a fun-to-drive car.

On the other note, Toyota & VAG groups are two very different but the best car ownership experiences. VWs are well put together, driver's cars. Go for the 1.5 DSG variant. There will be no issues post sales in the first 5 years [Generally I do not recommend going for preowned (6+ years old) VW / SKODA].

The Hyryder is a good car, however since you already have a Crysta, good to take a test drive of Slavia/Virtus. Not everyone is comfortable with a sedan after getting used to UV or high seating. Virtus/Slavia will be more fun to drive, and Hyryder will be economical and easier to drive.

The Hyryder would be a good mile muncher considering the hybrid system and high ARAI-certified mileage figures, but the Slavia/Virtus would be a fun sedan to complement your Innova. Do take a test drive of both and decide whether you want to go for fun or frugal.
