Toyota will partner with Walkinshaw Andretti United to compete in the Supercars Championship in Australia.

Toyota has confirmed that its iconic sports car, the Supra, will join the Supercars Championship in Australia in 2026. For this, Toyota Australia has announced that the Japanese carmaker will fit a V8 engine under the bonnet of its sports coupe.

The Toyota GR Supra race car's engine will come in the form of the 2UR-GSE quad-cam 5.0-litre V8 unit. This engine has already been used in a few Lexus road cars such as the IS F, RC F, GS F, LC500 and the IS500 F-Sport Performance. In addition to this, the 5.0-litre V8 engine also powers Toyota's 2019 Dakar Rally conquering Hilux pickup truck.

Details of the upcoming Toyota Supra V8 are scarce. The carmaker has showcased a clay model and a few digital renderings of what the car could look like. As seen from the renderings, the Supra V8 could feature a large rear wing, chrome exhaust pipes under the side doors, an extreme air splitter and large air intakes at the front; among other changes.

Sean Hanley, VP of Sales, Marketing & Franchise Operations, Toyota Australia, stated, "At Toyota, we have been toying with the idea of competing in Supercars for more than 20 years and now with the right car, the right team, and a very strong partnership with the Repco Supercars Championship, the time is definitely right."
